After three weeks of trial and error, I finally caught my first squirrel. I started with the Havahart 1025 and found my prey kept getting away. I realized the trap was too small for the little bugger because my bait would disappear even after the trap had sprang. I took it back and got me the next biggest trap that Lowes carries: Havahart 1092. For those who are familiar with the 1092, it’s quite huge and made for trapping stray cats, raccoons, and similar sized animals. Though the trap was big it was easy to handle, bait, and set. I left it out for several days without much luck. The little bugger wouldn’t take the bait behind the trigger plate. He would nibble at it from the outside of the cage and left me cleaning up after the scraps. Again, I packed up the trap and took it back. I searched the Internet, looking for a retailer that carries the medium-sized traps, specifically the Model 1084. I wasn’t interested in online purchase due to the hassle of returns. I didn’t find many within the area. One of the major carriers of Havahart traps, however, was Ace Hardware. There were many in the area, so I called around asking for the 1084. After many tries, I found one store who has it. I made my trip there after work and had my trap set that same night. The Model 1084 was small and light, so I was able to position it in the tree where I had the most activity. Unlike the 1092 which opens from both sides, you have reach in to load the bait. I left the persimmon in the back of the cage. When I came back the next day, I found a side of the persimmon had been nibbled away. Fluster but unwavered I decided to hang the persimmon this time and reposition the opening of trap toward a branch where the little bugger can easily access. To my surprise the next day, the cage door had be shut and what looked like a brown ball from faraway turned out to be the little bugger that has been trashing my yard the past year. I was so elated; and I have Havahart to thank for for constructing such a great contraption.

The mesh is big enough for grey squirrels to just reach in and take the bait. I tried putting it inside a tin can and they rolled the trap around to get it- demolishing a flower bed in the process. So far I’m disappointed. I’m going to try to smear peanut butter directly on the plates and see what happens.

I can’t say enough good things about this trap. The only experience I ever had trapping animals was with gophers when I was a kid. The toughest part of that was rigging the trap so it worked correctly. I knew setting traps took some talent and I had neither the will or time to learn trap setting for my small squirrel problem. In short this trap is incredible. Made in the USA, HIGH quality and super easy. You literally pull up the handle and it sets. Toss a platter of peanut butter in the back and you have hours of entertainment. I say hours because your squirrels will be gone in hours. I caught them as fast as I put the trap out (Many times with me in the yard). I called my frequent trips to the city park the Squirrel Express Now I have no squirrels and lots of tasty strawberries and tomatoes to eat! This trap will not disappoint.

Had skunks nesting under a concrete step in our backyard. Caught the first one the first night I set the trap and the second

one a few days later. If you’re trying the trap a skunk, recommend covering up the back 1/3 of the trap (where the bait is placed)

with duck tape or a small towel. If not, they’ll simply reach through the side and steal the bait. Use peanut butter to trap

skunks – they love the stuff. Once trapped, simply approach the cage holding a large towel and cover the trap. Easy to release trapped animal

by simply pulling up on the handle. Both times, skunks made no attempt to spray even though I was right behind the cage.. they just ran away

glad to be free.

This is the size trap you need for gray squirrels. Once tripped they will not escape from this trap. The problem with this trap is it is hard to trip. You can smear peanut butter on the trip plate and they will clean it off without tripping. If you put the peanut in a tray past the trip plate they will either step over the plate or they step on it and it doesn’t trip. What I had to do is to put a large wooden matchstick under the trip handle. This effectively partially tripped it. You want something as thick as you can put under the handle without tripping it yourself.

The second problem is this trap has large openings in the wire mesh. Much larger than my 50 year old Havahart trap. The squirrels will be able to get their paw out through the openings. So if you put the trap on a deck the deck will get scratched up.

I purchased another trap based on the reviews there and then realized that the trap was too small. This trap is fabulous! Simple setup. I intend to leave it setup and am not worried about trying to collapse the cage although it appears easy to do. I have used peanut butter with a trail of sunflower seeds into the trap. While I am annoyed at the neighbor down the street who has decided to feed the squirrels peanuts during the winter, I now have the trap to catch them, drive them 3-4 miles away, and let them go!

NOTE: be sure to put some newspaper down in the auto since the squirrels tend to “let loose” while in transport and you do not want squirrel pee and poop in your car!

I knew nothing about catching the rabbit in our garden, but I decided that I would give this trap a try based on the reviews that I read here. It seemed easy enough to assemble and humane for getting rid of the rabbit. When the package arrived, we assembled it without any problems. We put it out in the garden area and put some cabbage leaves and baby carrots in the trap. On the third night, we caught the rabbit! It was easy to transport and release the rabbit at a wooded area that is just a mile from the house. We have since placed the trap outside again just in case there is another rabbit in our garden, but so far, we have seen no evidence of any more rabbits. I would reccommend this trap. It is light-weight, but very sturdy, and will do the job that you need. If you were to stop me on the street, I would reccommend this trap for anyone who asks me about it.

I purchased this trap from Amazon based on price, size, and favorable reviews. My goal is to catch the squirrel or squirrels that are slowly eating all the plastic and rubber under the hood of our Pontiac Vibe. Damage so far is well over a thousand dollars and counting.

I had looked at a fully assembled Havahart trap at Home Depot but passed on it because this model is a few dollars cheaper. Big mistake.

Maybe I’m just a clutz, but I didn’t find assembly that easy, and the included directions are muddy and generally poor. I ended up just studying what was before me and assembled the trap without using the printed directions.

I’ve owned regular traps before and find them much sturdier than this collapsible trap. Unless you really need to save a little space, I’d definitely recommend purchasing a fully assembled trap. If assembled correctly this trap is sturdy enough but not as sturdy as one that’s not collapsible.

After a few days I finally did catch a varmint in the trap placed next to the Vibe. It might have been the squirrel, but since he escaped out of the back of the trap I’ll never know. There’s a piece that has to be inserted at that end to secure the back door, and apparently I did that incorrectly. I’ve reinstalled the piece and hopefully when I catch the next squirrel he won’t get away.

You can release the squirrel or other animal from the front or back of the trap. I won’t be releasing from the back of the trap because there is not protection for the trapper’s hand while disengaging the door and opening it.

At the side on which you set the trap there is protection for the user’s hand, but one must open the spring loaded trap and keep it open by sliding a piece of wood through the trap’s mesh. I’m not looking forward to that either.

I’m not thrilled with this trap, but it is a good size for catching squirrels, and my feelings will change if I catch the squirrel(s) that have been eating our car.

Works great, except for skunks. Wire traps don’t stop skunk spray. I had to wrap it in a furniture blanket. The Animal Control guys wouldn’t take it until we got the skunk into a sealed trap they brought the next day. In the meantime this skunk just sprayed and sprayed. My Neighbors loved it

For the price, the cage works great for catching squirrels. So far, we have caught 11 squirrels and relocated them. After letting the animal out, there is a metal pin you have to re-insert and position a certain way. It takes a little getting used to, but overall the product is good for the price.
