If you are planning on getting a Macaw you’re in for a super adventure. These birds are absolutely amazing and each one has it’s own special personality. You’ll find that your life will never be the same once you welcome one of these birds into your home.
One of the things you’ll need to do first is get a proper cage. If this is your first time owning any type of parrot you may not know how to shop for a big cage. Macaws need an extra big cage, and here are some tips to help you shop for one.
1. Get the largest cage possible
Take a close look at your home and your budget to see how a large cage can fit into your home and into your budget. See if there is any way to re-arrange furniture if necessary to free up some space for a big cage. You don’t want to end up with an unhappy bird simply due to space limitations.
Also, if money is an object, take a second look at your budget to see where you can squeeze out some extra cash. There is no use in getting a smaller cage now as a temporary solution until you have enough money available for a larger one. Macaw cages do cost a lot of money. If you can’t afford the right cage now, perhaps it is time to put off buying your bird for the time being.
2. Safety features
As far as safety goes, your Macaw bird cage should have a bar spacing of at least an inch. If the spacing isn’t correct you bird could get injured. Also, make sure that the cage is made of a solid metal and any paint used on it is safe for birds. Stainless steel cages are perfect for Macaws.
3. Other things to look for
Macaw cages should have large doors to make it easy for the bird to enter and exit. It also makes cleaning time easier for you and simplifies the process of changing the food dishes. While you are looking at the doors, also make sure that they lock easily.
There should also be a removable tray at the bottom that slides in and out easily and at least 2 soft perches. These types of perches are more comfortable for a Macaw.
Are you ready for your new Macaw? Do you have bird food already and perhaps a few toys for him? Well then, it is time to get the cage. Make sure it has enough room for those toys and has the safety features you need. You’ll want to have it set up perfectly for that proud moment when you can introduce your Macaw to its new home.
